Betsy Gray, according to a very strong local legend, followed her boyfriend Willie Boal to the Battle of Ballynahinch in June 1798 where the United Irishmen were defeated by Crown forces. Betsy and Willie were killed while fleeing, not by regular redcoats, but local yeomanry from Annahilt.

The left hand building was the Post Office and the name Ballygrainey has been retained thankfully. The cafe is in the former home of the Moore family who for generations ran the Post Office. The remains of the cottage of the Grays and later Macartneys is in the grounds of Summerhill retirement home nearby.
